PVC trim, more precisely called cellular PVC, is a solid foamed plastic board. It is not a coating and it is not hollow. When you cut a piece of it in half, the middle looks the same as the outside. That is the whole point, and it is why it behaves so differently from a wrap.

For PVC trim, consider:

  • Lasts 30 to 50 years
  • It isn’t susceptible to damage and decay
  • Ability to withstand high and low temperatures
  • Cost-effective over time
  • Costs $24 to $28 per linear foot installed

When it comes to aluminum trim vs PVC for home siding, PVC trim can withstand severely high or negatively low temperatures and has the capacity to fight moisture. It is strong, easy to maintain, and cost effective. PVC trim today is available in styles that imitate wood grain to satisfy those who love wood but want the minimal maintenance that PVC provides.

The numbers back that up. AZEK, one of the major cellular PVC manufacturers, publishes a water absorption figure of about 0.15% by mass under ASTM D570, a Class A flame spread rating under ASTM E84, and a pass on the ASTM D3345 termite resistance test. Versatex publishes a flame spread index of 20 and a heat deflection temperature in the 146°F to 153°F range. These are not marketing adjectives, they are test results you can look up yourself, and they explain why a PVC water table board on a Framingham colonial is still solid twenty winters later.

The honest downsides of PVC trim

It moves a lot. Cellular PVC has a coefficient of linear thermal expansion around 4.9 x 10⁻⁵ in/in/°F. Aluminum is around 1.3 x 10⁻⁵. In plain English, a 16-foot PVC board can move close to an inch across a 100-degree swing between a January night and a July afternoon on a south-facing wall. Aluminum in the same spot moves about a quarter inch. This is completely manageable, but only if the installer gaps the butt joints, glues them with PVC cement, and fastens according to the manufacturer’s schedule. It is the single most common reason PVC trim jobs look bad after two summers.

Dark colors are a real constraint. AZEK instructs that if you paint their trim, you use 100% acrylic latex with a light reflectance value of 55 or higher. Darker paint absorbs more heat, and PVC softens as it heats. If your heart is set on a black or deep charcoal trim, tell your contractor before the order goes in, because it changes which product line and which coating you should be using.

It is a plastic. It is combustible. More on that below, because it is a section nobody else writes.

It is the more expensive option. At $24 to $28 per linear foot installed, PVC trim costs roughly 50% more than wrapping. That gap is real money on a full house.

Aluminum Trim: What You Are Actually Buying

Aluminum trim is not a board. It is coil stock, typically 0.019 inches thick, sometimes 0.024 or 0.025 for heavier-duty applications, that a sider bends on a brake and forms around the wood trim that is already on your house. The metal is the raincoat. The wood is still the structure.

That distinction matters more than anything else in this comparison. Buying aluminum trim is buying a finish and a water management detail. Buying PVC trim is buying a replacement.

Where aluminum genuinely wins

  • Cost. At $15 to $20 per linear foot installed, wrapping is the most affordable way to stop repainting trim.
  • Dimensional stability. Aluminum barely moves with temperature. No expansion gaps, no seasonal joint gapping.
  • Noncombustible. The metal itself will not burn.
  • Custom profiles. A skilled installer can bend aluminum to fit a brickmould, a sill nose, or an oddball 1890s casing profile that no manufacturer makes a PVC part for. On historic homes in Lexington or Hingham, this is often the only practical way to keep the original profile.
  • Recyclable. Aluminum has a genuinely strong end-of-life story compared to PVC.
  • Long finish warranties. Premium coil like Alside’s Performance G8 carries a 30-year limited warranty on the finish.

The honest downsides of aluminum trim

It dents, and it stays dented. A leaned ladder, a weed whacker, a hailstone, a kid with a hockey puck. Thin coil takes a permanent dimple and there is no filling it. PVC in the same spot shrugs it off.

It hides what it covers. This is the big one. Capping stops water coming from outside, but if moisture is getting into the wood from a leaking window, a failed flashing, or vapor drive from inside the house, the aluminum traps it and the rot accelerates in the dark where nobody can see it. Wrapping sound wood is smart. Wrapping wet wood is expensive procrastination.

The seams depend on caulk. Wrapped trim is assembled from bent pieces, and the joints are usually sealed. Caulk is a maintenance item, not a permanent bond. Plan on inspecting seams every few years.

Finish quality varies enormously. Not all coil is the same. Standard baked polyester enamel is the budget option and it can chalk and fade. Premium mar-resistant coatings and true PVDF finishes based on Kynar 500 resin, which meet the AAMA 2605 standard, hold color dramatically longer. Two quotes that both say “aluminum trim” can be quoting products a generation apart in quality. Ask for the coil brand and the coating name in writing.

Do not cap pressure-treated wood directly. The copper compounds in modern ACQ treated lumber corrode bare aluminum on contact. If any of your trim is pressure treated, the installer needs a laminated or film-backed coil made for that purpose, or a separation layer. This is a detail a lot of crews skip.

Trim Wraps: An Option for Existing Wood Trim

If your existing wood trim doesn’t need to be replaced, and if it doesn’t have rot or mold, then you might consider trim wrapping.

Trim capping, or “wrapping,” is a method used by contractors to protect wood trim from moisture and other damage. The wood trim may also be wrapped to give the home an update or fresh style. One clarification worth making, because the terminology confuses everyone: PVC-coated aluminum coil is still aluminum. The PVC is a thin laminated film on the surface that adds texture and durability to the finish. It is not the same thing as a cellular PVC board, and it does not carry the same properties. If a salesperson tells you they are “installing PVC” and hands you a quote at wrap pricing, ask which one they mean.

A few things to understand about how those numbers behave in the real world.

The material cost and the labor cost run in opposite directions. Aluminum coil is cheap to buy and slow to install, because every piece is measured, cut, and bent on site by hand. PVC boards cost more to buy and go up faster. That is why the total gap between them is narrower than the material prices alone would suggest.

Complexity moves the number more than material choice does. A ranch with straight, simple window casings sits at the low end. A Victorian with bay windows, brackets, dentil detail, and a wrapped porch column sits well above the high end for either material, because everything has to be custom fitted.

And the cheapest quote is often the one that skips prep. If a bid comes in far under these ranges, ask specifically what happens if the crew opens up a corner and finds rot. A quote that has no answer to that question is a quote that plans to cap over it.

The New England Problem: Freeze-Thaw and Thermal Movement

This is where the generic national blog posts stop being useful, because most of them are written in Ohio or Maryland.

Massachusetts trim sees roughly 130 to 150 freeze-thaw cycles a year on exposed elevations, plus a surface temperature range that can run from below zero in February to well over 120°F on dark south-facing trim in August. Every material on your house is being pumped in and out through that cycle, all day, every day, for decades.

Wood handles this by absorbing moisture, swelling, drying, shrinking, and eventually splitting at the joints and letting go of its paint film. That is why New England trim needs repainting every four to five years and why so much of it is rotted at the bottom of the casing legs.

PVC in freeze-thaw: essentially unaffected chemically. There is almost no water in the board to freeze, which is the entire point of that 0.15% absorption number. What it does do is move dimensionally, a lot. Manufacturers publish gapping and fastening schedules specifically for this, and installers who follow them get flat, tight trim. Installers who treat PVC like a wood board get buckled boards and open joints by the second summer.

Aluminum in freeze-thaw: the metal itself is unaffected and barely moves. The vulnerability is the wood inside and the sealant at the seams. Freeze-thaw is brutal on caulk joints, and once a seam opens at the top of a window cap, the cavity behind it becomes a very effective water collector.

That is the honest summary. PVC’s weakness is installer skill. Aluminum’s weakness is what it is hiding.

Fire and Smoke: The Section Nobody Writes

Every trim comparison online skips this. We are going to cover it, because if you go looking you will find it anyway, and we would rather you hear it from us.

Aluminum is a noncombustible metal. It will not contribute fuel to a fire. That said, capping does not make your house fire resistant. The wood underneath is still wood, and thin aluminum loses integrity at fire temperatures quickly.

Cellular PVC carries a Class A flame spread rating under ASTM E84, which is the best flame spread class available. Manufacturers publish flame spread indices in the range of 10 to 20, well under the Class A ceiling of 25. Cellular PVC also does not sustain a flame on its own once the ignition source is removed, and self-ignition temperatures are published around 806°F.

Here is the part the marketing does not lead with. Class A refers to how fast flame travels across the surface. It is not the same thing as low smoke. PVC burns with dense, dark smoke, and manufacturers publish smoke-developed values accordingly. Versatex, for example, lists a smoke development rating at or above 450 in the published specification for its PVC siding, alongside that Class A flame spread number.

What this means for you practically: cellular PVC trim is code-compliant exterior trim, used on millions of American homes, and this is not a reason to avoid it. But if you live in a designated wildland-urban interface area, or you are on a tight urban lot with fire separation distance requirements, or you are working on a multi-family building, the fire assembly requirements are a real design input and you should raise it with your contractor and your local building department before you order material. For a typical single-family home in Westborough or Hudson, this is a footnote. We would rather give you the footnote than pretend it does not exist.

When Aluminum Trim Is Actually the Better Choice

We install more PVC than aluminum, so it would be easy for us to write this comparison as a PVC advertisement. It is not that simple. Choose aluminum wrapping when:

  • Your wood trim is genuinely sound. Probe it. If it is firm everywhere, wrapping preserves good material and saves you real money.
  • You are on a strict budget and need the whole house done. Wrapping everything beats doing a third of the house in PVC and leaving the rest to rot.
  • You have an unusual historic profile you want to keep. A brake and a skilled hand can match almost anything.
  • The trim is in a high-heat, dark-color application. Aluminum does not care about dark colors. PVC does.
  • You are selling within a few years. Wrapping delivers most of the visual improvement for a lot less capital.
  • Access is difficult. Third-story dormer trim that requires staging is expensive to replace and comparatively cheap to cap.

When PVC Trim Is Actually the Better Choice

Choose new cellular PVC when:

  • There is any rot, softness, or insect damage. Do not cap it. Replace it.
  • The trim is at or near grade. Water tables, skirt boards, and anything within splash range of the ground. PVC is rated for ground contact. Wrapped wood at grade is a countdown.
  • You are replacing windows anyway. The trim is coming off regardless, so the incremental cost of PVC is small.
  • You want crisp, wide, or built-up profiles. PVC gives you a real board with real edges and real shadow lines. Wrapped trim always reads slightly softer up close.
  • You are staying in the house for twenty years or more. Over that horizon, the replacement approach usually costs less in total than wrapping plus the eventual wood failure underneath.
  • Woodpeckers, carpenter bees, or termites are a known issue on your street. They are not interested in PVC.

Warranty Fine Print Worth Reading

Both products are sold with impressive-sounding warranties. Both have terms that almost nobody reads.

Cellular PVC. AZEK covers its trim and moulding with a Lifetime Limited Warranty. The detail worth knowing is the transfer clause: the warranty may be transferred one time, and only within the five-year period beginning at original purchase. If you install PVC trim and sell the house in year eight, the coverage does not follow the buyer. If resale value is part of your reasoning, that is a term to plan around.

Aluminum coil. Premium coil finishes such as Alside’s Performance G8 carry a 30-year limited warranty covering finish failures like peeling, blistering, flaking, chipping, and crazing. Note what that covers and what it does not. It covers the paint. It does not cover denting, and it does not cover the wood underneath, which is the part most likely to actually fail.

Neither warranty covers installation. Manufacturer warranties on both products exclude damage caused by improper installation, which is the single largest cause of trim failure in this climate. The contractor’s own workmanship warranty is the one that matters most, and it is the one you should read hardest.

What to Ask Before You Sign

Bring this list to every estimate, including ours.

  1. Are you probing the existing wood before you quote wrapping? The correct answer involves an awl or a screwdriver, not a look from the driveway.
  2. What happens if you find rot after the work starts? You want a written change-order rate, not a surprise.
  3. Which specific product? Not “PVC,” but the brand and line. Not “aluminum,” but the coil brand, thickness, and coating name.
  4. How are PVC butt joints handled? You want to hear about gapping and PVC cement, not just fasteners.
  5. What fasteners? Cellular PVC calls for stainless steel or hot-dipped galvanized. Electro-galvanized nails will bleed rust streaks down your trim.
  6. Is any of the existing trim pressure treated? If yes, how are you isolating it from the aluminum?
  7. How is the head flashing detailed? Wrapping a window without correcting the flashing above it just relocates the leak.
  8. Is there a drip edge on the sill? A clad sill has to shed water away from the wall. The leading edge must be the lowest point.
  9. Is this trim work triggering a building permit? Cosmetic trim usually does not, but window replacement and structural repairs do, and requirements vary by town.
  10. Was the house built before 1978? If so, disturbing painted trim brings EPA Renovation, Repair and Painting rules into play, and your contractor should be RRP certified. Ask to see the certification.
  11. Are you in a local historic district? Lexington, Concord, Newton and many others have commissions with opinions about exterior material changes. Check before, not after.
  12. What is your workmanship warranty, in writing, and for how long?

How to Spot a Bad Trim Job

Whether you go aluminum or PVC, these are the things we look for when we are called in to assess someone else’s work:

  • Oil canning. Visible waviness in flat aluminum surfaces, usually from over-tight fastening or a poor brake job.
  • Caulk doing structural work. If seams are filled with a thick bead instead of overlapped and formed, the joint will open.
  • No gap at PVC butt joints, or gaps that have opened up. Both mean the expansion schedule was ignored.
  • Fastener dimples. Nails driven too deep into PVC leave visible craters and restrict the board’s movement.
  • Wrapped trim with no visible drainage path. Water gets behind trim eventually. It has to have somewhere to go.
  • Rust streaks. The wrong fasteners were used.
  • Trim capped tight to the roof. Fascia and rake trim need clearance and proper drip edge integration.
