What is the Best Type of Underlayment For Roofs?
Beyond shingles: What makes a sturdy roof?
A roof and all its supporting components work together to protect the structural integrity and beauty of a home. Acting as the first line of defense for your family and belongings, a well-crafted roof keeps harsh weather at bay, protects the attic space, and insulates the home from extreme cold and heat.
But a sturdy roof goes beyond just the layer of shingles. An underlayment is a critical layer that helps to further protect your home from the elements and keep it dry. This barrier material is installed directly on the roof deck.
The three main types of underlayment include:
- Asphalt-saturated felt
- Rubberized asphalt
- Synthetic felt
The type used on your home will depend on the preference of your roofer, the type of roof you have, and the kind of repair or replacement you need.
Over time, underlayments need to be replaced, depending on the condition of the roof. Historically, only one type was used, and that was asphalt-saturated felt. However, advancements have brought other options to the forefront. Let’s go over each type and the benefits they bring.
Asphalt-saturated felt
This type is best for use in inexpensive roof repairs, tile shingles and slate shingles. This water resistant, not waterproof felt is similar to tar paper but instead of tar, the water resistant element is asphalt. While it does provide adequate moisture protection and insulation, it does not have the flexibility and durability of synthetic or rubberized asphalt underlayments.
That being said, it is the most affordable option for roof underlayments and can protect against impact damage such as tree branches or hail. It’s available in two weight classes: 15 pounds per hundred square feet and 30 pounds per hundred square feet. No. 15 felt is best for light-duty projects, such as shed roofs and detached garages. No. 30 is better for larger projects and for protecting a home from moisture.
Rubberized asphalt
Offering premium roofing protection against extreme temperatures as well as leak prevention, this waterproof underlayment is self-adhering and self-healing, and works well in a variety of climates. With this type, you get the highest level of waterproofing, so it’s great for leak-prone areas around vents, eaves, valleys, chimneys, and skylights. The adhesive backing sticks directly to the roof deck, preventing moisture from getting through.
Comprised of rubber polymers and asphalt, rubberized asphalt can be patched if it experiences a leak or other type of damage. Rubberized asphalt is the most expensive type, though, and may not be the right choice for budget-conscious homeowners.
Synthetics
Synthetics, including synthetic felt, are known for their tear-resistance, mold-resistance, and durability. Not only are they recyclable, they boast a high heat tolerance with reliable water resistance. This lightweight type of underlayment goes on fast and is easy to walk on, which makes for easier installation.
While it costs more than asphalt-saturated felt, it’s more affordable than rubberized asphalt underlayments. Thus, this middle of the road choice works well with most budgets without sacrificing durability.
The use of synthetic roof underlayments has been gaining in popularity in recent years. Its anti-slip properties make it easier to walk on for roofers during installation, and its elasticity allows it to expand and contract with temperature changes so it doesn’t tear. Synthetic felt is particularly well suited for metal roofs, as it’s more heat-resistant than its rubberized or asphalt-saturated cousins.
